Crumpler (Rebecca Davis) is born in Delaware.

Raised by an aunt in Pennsylvania, Rebecca Crumpler moves to Boston in 1852, lives initially in Charlestown, and works as a nurse. She becomes the first African-American woman to earn a medical degree in 1864,* marries Arthur Crumpler, in 1865, and moves to Virginia to work for the Freedman’s Bureau, then returns to Boston in 1869, and establishes a medical practice in her home at 67 Joy Street. Crumpler moves to Hyde Park, in 1883, dies there on March 9, 1895, and is buried in Fairview Cemetery, initially in an unmarked grave. A headstone is dedicated on July 16, 2020.
